Biography

Diego Velázquez was a prominent Spanish painter of the 17th century and the leading artist at the royal court of King Philip IV. He was born in Seville, where he began his artistic training under Francisco Pacheco. Velázquez's early works were influenced by the naturalism of the Italian Renaissance, particularly the works of Titian and Caravaggio. He eventually became known for his ability to depict the human figure and his innovative use of light and shadow. Velázquez's most famous work, 'Las Meninas,' exemplifies his masterful technique and complex composition, blending real and imagined spaces while portraying the royal family and the artist himself within the scene. His work transcended the traditional themes of portraiture, and he became known for painting everyday life and complex allegories. Velázquez's influence on future generations of artists is profound, inspiring movements such as Impressionism and Modernism. He is considered one of the greatest painters in Western art history, celebrated for his artistic genius and innovative approach to representation.
