Biography

Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and stage designer who is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He was born in Málaga, Spain, to a middle-class family. His father, José Ruiz Blasco, was an art teacher, and his mother, María Picasso, was a homemaker. Showing artistic talent from a young age, Picasso enrolled at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid at the age of 16. He later moved to Paris, where he became involved with a community of avant-garde artists and intellectuals. Picasso's early works, often referred to as his Blue and Rose periods, showcase his evolution in style—from the melancholy shades of blue to the vibrant tones of rose. He is most famous for co-founding the Cubist movement, along with Georges Braque, a revolutionary approach to depicting subjects that emphasized the two-dimensionality of the canvas. Cubism allowed Picasso to break free from traditional perspectives, showcasing multiple viewpoints within a single image. His works during this period include masterpieces like 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon' and 'Violin and Candlestick'. Throughout his career, Picasso's innovations extended toward Surrealism and Symbolism, constantly changing his style and techniques. He produced an extensive body of work, estimated at over 50,000 art pieces, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, drawings, and textiles. Additionally, Picasso was involved in political activism, visibly supporting anti-war causes, notably through his work 'Guernica', a response to the bombing of the town during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso's influence is vast, affecting generations of artists and solidifying his legacy in the art world. His exploration of form, color, and technique transformed the understanding of artistic representation and expression.
